What to buy ? It has to be older (=cheap) and EU-market.

Requirements:

A little bit taller than normal, but not a crossover.

Practical

Light weight (important)

Comfortable

Economical

Cheap (€3k? Something like that)

21st century

Reliable

Available in Europe

Gasoline or LPG, no diesel

Preferably a manual transmission, but an automatic would be acceptable.

My best bet so far: 1997-2007 Citroen Berlingo/Peugeot Partner. Any better suggestions out there?

The Berlingo is supposed to be a decently reliable practical ride from all the accounts I’ve read. No performance machine, of course, haha, but it would be great as a DD.

I like that Land Rover. It’s a little bit, well, utilitarian though. I would like to see the look on my mom’s face if I were to show that to her and tell her it’s what I intent her new car to be.

Those two minivans are way too big (cars are very heavily taxed on weight here) and thirsty. Both have questionable reliability as well, although I know from experience that the engine in that Citroën is bulletproof and that mileage is laughably low.

I asked the shop that sometimes service my cars (they specialize in older French cars) and the guy said they’re absolutely fine in every rational aspect. Not sexy or fast, but great for those who are getting on in age. My parents are in their 60s, so it’s fine. I would skip the base 75 hp 1.4L engine though, due to lack of power while not offering significantly better economy than the 110 hp 16 valve 1.6L.

Oh, I had no idea, I tried to find a newer Berlingo for under 3k but couldn’t, did find a lot of Mitsubishi Space Stars which look like small Space Wagons. Is the C4 Picasso way out of your budget?

I’m well verse in the AutoScout world from the time I decided to sell two of my cars here and buy a Mondial Quattrovalvole in Switzerland.

Yeah, 110hp is perfectly adequate. The 1.6L G4ED Alpha II engine in my DD ‘09 Accent hatch has 110hp and I never feel like I need more power with a standard trans.....that being said, my brother and mother both have sedan Accents also with the same 110hp engine, but with AUTO transmissions, and they are slow as hell...I imagine the performance numbers aren’t that much different in reality, but the auto really saps the power, it seems like.

Edit: Doh just realised you said no diesel. Not sure if I'm remembering correctly but the 1.6 hdi has known issues so keep an eye out for that, otherwise the Berlingo fits. Maybe check out typical MPVs like the Ford C Max etc.

Great cars (preferably as a V), but way too large. I’ll show you their current car (internet picture). I barely managed to convince them that the low running costs of that Suzuki are not worth the horrible out of town driving dynamics. I live 2 hours from them, and that car basically stops them from visiting me as it’s too uncomfortable on a 2 hour trip. When they go on holiday they take a bus . Yet, they own the Suzuki for 5 years now. There’s no way those penny pinchers are going to buy a huge gas hog.

I read the same thing. The early hdi engines aren’t the best. The gas engines from that era seem to be fine though.

yeah i guess they’re neither lightweight nor economical.

Honestly, I’d probably go with the Berlingo considering the criteria, but there are quite a few decent Fusions in your price range:

http://www.autoscout24.com/results?cid=0&…

No idea if they’re any good, beyond the fact that a bestilted Fiesta can’t really be that bad, but it’s the only other common, old, moderately tall car I could think of.

There’s also the Hyundai Matrix. With its Pininfarina badge it’ll look good next to my 306 convertible and 406 coupe (and former 205 CTI). /s

I have no idea of any of those cars are any good though. As far as I know the gasoline Berlingo is somewhat bullet proof and has 306 underpinnings, meaning I could probably swap in nice seats or something like that.

Nothing older and French, or German, or Italian for that matter, something like a Yaris or Corolla Verso or my mates folks have just bought an 08 Nissan Note, seems a nice enough car for the old dears, plenty of space, pretty frugal as well.

My grandfather (b1925) owns a regular Yaris, which my dad sometimes drives my grandparents around in and is thus a reference point he uses. It’s a bit too small, but otherwise perfect. Soul sucking dull to drive/look at/sit in, but that’s not the main point. Yaris Verso is out due to my parents having eyes (ugliest 21st century car available). The Corolla Verso is an interesting suggestion though. It’s on the expensive side for what you get in my opinion, but worth considering assuming I manage to overcome my deep rooted hate for anything Corolla (fwd). Advantage is that they’re exclusively driven by the elderly and tend to be taken care off properly.

Though it’s probably the only Skoda I don’t like the look of, a colleague at work has one and he loves it. He’s getting on a bit and loves the comfort and space which is great when he takes his wife and her friends out for lunch or bingo or whatever older people do these days.

I think he had owned like 2 or 3. He really thought I should get one when I was in the market for a new car a few years ago. I’m no expert on them but think it matches pretty well with the required specs you listed.

Maybe a little paranoid yeah : ) Although on the flip side of that coin there was also a guy at the same job with a newish (this was 2012 or so) Passat wagon and he was on his third gearbox within two years (both were replaced under warranty), so I understand where you're coming from!

The Berlingo/Partner is usally quite bulletproof. Have you thought about a same era 307/C4 ? They’re not great cars, but they’re still good. Or you could maybe find a 1st gen 308 (my father has a 2012 one, with close to 200k on it, never had any problem with it, it has the 1.6 HDi though).

Here’s Leboncoin, though you’ll mostly find Diesels in there as it’s a French website...
http://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/84794…

mobile.de has some crazy cheap ones listed though

I’m slightly afraid of the 307/C4, as I’ve heard they’re not nearly as bulletproof as the earlier Peugeots. Nor as good to drive, but that’s not an issue for the desired goal here. They are a bit on the tall side, so from a practical point of view a 307 SW could work. 308 is too new, and I don’t trust the Mini engine.

Depends on which engine you get. They were the first with the 1.6 I think, so they have their flaws, but the earlier one should be better. My father got a few of them (3 or 4 I think), and got them changed at 80k never had a problem with them (they were all diesels though).

The Berlingo/Partner is probably the best bet though (skip the Kangoo, it’s not on par with it).
